Carolina’s last fundraising campaign ended on Dec. 31, 2007, raising $2.38 billion to advance the University’s vision of becoming the nation’s leading public university. State funding reductions and historic economic upheaval followed, challenging Carolina’s ability to remain excellent in teaching, research and service.

It has. Today, the student body is extraordinary. Admission applications have increased annually for more than a decade. Our faculty are globally renowned and include two Nobel Laureates. Our research enterprise and funding have grown dramatically, recently exceeding $1 billion in sponsored research dollars.

The University has also made huge strides in trailblazing fields such as biomedical engineering, cancer immunotherapy and big data. Carolina has built a flourishing innovation center, helping launch hundreds of start-ups, generate thousands of jobs and pump billions of dollars into the state’s economy.

Now, the University stands ready to lead the academic world in improving the human condition; private philanthropy will be crucial to that goal.
